Story of the Week
Why Big Changes Feel So Risky
We’re wired to stick with what’s familiar. Even if it’s not working as well as we’d like, it feels safer than the unknown. But growth always lives on the other side of change. The habits, strategies, and mindsets that got you to this point might not be the ones that will take you to the next level.
Think about it: every major leap in your life or business probably started with a big, sometimes uncomfortable or scary decision. That’s always been the case for me. From starting my architecture business in 2008 after getting laid off, to my first time on stage in 2010, and even publishing my first book. The same thing happened in my personal life too, from getting married to having kids! Scary, but life changing in all of the best ways.
How to Make Big Changes Feel Less Scary
1. Reframe Change as Progress
Instead of seeing change as a threat, see it as a sign you’re moving forward. If you’re feeling the itch to do something different, it’s probably because you’re ready for more.
2. Break It Down
Big changes don’t have to happen all at once. What’s the first small step you can take toward your new direction? Start there.
3. Remember Your Track Record
You’ve made big changes before and survived. In fact, you’re probably better off because of them. Trust your ability to adapt.
4. Focus on the Possibility, Not Just the Risk
Ask yourself, “What could go right?” instead of only worrying about what could go wrong.
A Change Is Coming Here, Too
Speaking of change, I wanted to give you a heads up: In the next couple of weeks, this newsletter will be getting a new name and a new focus. The 200th Unstuck newsletter comes out next week (don’t worry, it’s not going away), but we’re going to change it up a bit for you based on some feedback, and a new focus that will ultimately better serve you, too. I can’t wait!
Here’s to embracing the next chapter!
